Snakepit

An auto battler where every unit is a line of Python.

Snakepit teaches Python through an eight player auto battler. Every round opens with the next lesson of the free W3Schools Python tutorial: a short summary, an example you can run and a link to the full page. Then you shop, place your units on an island board and watch the fight play out against one of seven rivals.

Each unit is a Python idea, and its ability is written as code. Pip stuns with print("BOO!"), Slice hits enemies[-1] and Lambda picks off the weakest foe. After each fight a short pop quiz pays bonus gold for right answers. Your place in the 53 lessons carries over from game to game, and once you finish, the rounds go back over your weakest topics.

Snakepit version 0.1

Snakepit opens: an eight player auto battler that walks you through the W3Schools Python tutorial one round at a time, with a pop quiz after every fight.

Additions

  • Eight player auto battler: you against seven rivals, 100 health each, last one standing wins.
  • Every round teaches the next lesson of the W3Schools Python tutorial, 53 lessons from Get Started to Inheritance. Each has a summary, a runnable example with its output and a link to the page.
  • Pop quiz after every fight: 1, 2 or 3 multiple choice questions (you pick on the New game screen). +1 gold for each right answer and +1 more when all are right.
  • Every quiz answer explains why and links the lesson. Questions lean toward recent lessons and ones you missed.
  • Rivals study too: each gets a share of its quiz right, depending on difficulty.
  • 28 units, each one a Python idea with its ability written as code, such as:
    • Pip: print("BOO!") stuns
    • Slice: enemies[-1]
    • Lister: enemies[:3]
    • Sprout: team.append(Sapling())
    • Looper: for ... in range(5)
    • Lambda: min(enemies, key=lambda e: e.hp)
  • Synergies from 7 topics in tutorial order and 6 roles:
    • Topics: Basics, Types, Operators, Collections, Flow, Functions, Classes
    • Roles: Guard, Striker, Assassin, Ranger, Mage, Support
  • Bug hunts: everyone fights Python errors like SyntaxError, NameError, IndexError and ZeroDivisionError for gold and a free unit. Hover a bug to see what the error means.
  • Your course carries over between games. Pick your starting lesson, and "Your course" in the menu lists all 53 lessons with your scores.
  • Speech bubbles during fights are written in code font.
  • Rivals on Easy, Normal or Hard, with three save slots.
